Instead of fearing death, why don't we enjoy life?

Religion generally shuns the earthly world as a place of evil. The main cause of wanting heavenly salvation has been shown to be a fear of death. People with no religious conviction or, at least, a conviction of life after death are probably enlightened enough just by enjoying life. Why can't religions be the same?
